 Zamani began his career at the bar in 2004 after leaving school with an LLB (Hons) degree and was called to the bar in December 2006. His father was himself a prominent criminal lawyer, a founding member of the Victoria University of Wellington and University of Otago barristers’ chambers, and Zamani recalls a happy childhood with a lot of attention. Zamani was appointed Queen’s Counsel in December 2010. In 2016 he was appointed Queen’s Counsel of New Zealand. Zamani joined Massey University as a Legal Lecturer in 2007, lecturing in Criminal Law and Mental Health Law in the Victoria and Massey Law Schools. In 2008 he moved to Otago University as a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Dean of the Law Faculty and co-director of the Criminology Centre, a joint venture between the Massey Law School and the Otago University College of Education. In 2010, Zamani took a sabbatical from his professorial roles and undertook an international study course on law and human rights at the University of Cambridge. His international experience at the Cambridge University Overseas Student Development Programme was sponsored by the Law Foundation. In 2010, Zamani set up Zamani Law, a criminal defence firm. In March 2013, the firm was given Legal Solutions Services Provider of the Year (private sector) by the Law Society of New Zealand. Zamani Law was given second place in this award in 2011.
